Academic Bowl

The Academic Bowl teams practice once a week throughout the year for their competition in the spring. A theme is selected for Indiana for the competition each year. There are five academic teams at Pike Central Middle School. They are Social Studies, Mathematics, Language Arts, Science, and All Around. The students do extensive research and study on the selected thematic area. They then practice possible questions that may be asked. The coach this year is seventh grade teacher, Mrs. Karen Hill.

Accelerated Courses

Students who need greater challenges academically are invited to participate in select courses. There are accelerated coursed in Math and Language Arts are each grade level. Several classes offer high school credit while the student is still in middle school.

Midwest Talent

Students who are achieving academically beyond their years and meet certain criteria are invited to participate in the Midwest Talent Search by taking a college entrance exam. If they score well enough, they are invited to participate in various programs sponsored by colleges and universities. As a result of this some may be invited to complete college level work while still in middle school.

Spell Bowl

Spell Bowl competition is a team spelling activity.  See Mrs. Hill.

Special Education

Programs are offered for all students who have learning disabilities. It is the goal for each of these programs to create an individual education plan that meets the specific needs of each student. These include speech, hearing, emotional, physical, learning, mild, moderate, and severe.

Remediation Students who don't meet the academic standards as required by the state of Indiana are assigned classes which focus on helping them meet their specific academic needs. In addition, there is a period set aside each day for a time of individual help for students who find themselves struggling in a particular area.
