Winslow Elementary School is one of three elementary schools in the Pike County School Corporation.  Students feed into one middle/high school, Pike Central Middle & High School.  The enrollment remains fairly stable at around 300 students; the enrollment for the 2010 - 2011 school year is 315.  The school serves a community that is mostly a population that is involved in coal mining and farming.  A substantial core of the student body comes from rural and surrounding small communities.  Parents are involved in various activities with in the school, such as sports programs, PTO, American Education Week, Jr. Olympics, and other school activities.  The staff consists of 20 teachers, 14 support staff members,  5 cooks, 4 custodial staff members, a full time Nurse, a School Counselor, and full time Physical Education, Art and Music teachers.  The instruction is presented in self-contained classroom arrangement and the curriculum is organized around the state and local district curriculum recommendations.

Different types of resources and programs are available to our students.  We have a full time nurse to provide health services to all our students, and a full time counselor.  We have a library and each class has the opportunity to visit our library each week.  The library is available for teacher and students when it is not in use for a scheduled class.  We also have 2 Computer Labs consisting of 25 - 27 workstations in each lab and each classroom has networked computers in them.  The Computer Lab is available for each class using the lab at least once a week.  Title I services are provided for all students who qualify.  We have a preschool  program for students as a part of our Title I program.  A fully included special education program is available for mildly and moderately handicapped children along with speech/language services.  A major renovation of the building was  completed in late fall of 2001.
